Paint Impact Trait Guide: Rim Protection and Rebounding

Paint impact combines the two jobs that finish defensive possessions near the rim: interior defense and rebounding. The Hooper mode turns those underlying ratings into one slot so the eight-round build remains fast. The result is not simply a blocks category. It asks whether the player can protect the basket, control misses, and keep an interior weakness from lowering the complete build.

The 55/45 composite

Paint impact is calculated as 55 percent paint-defense rating and 45 percent rebounding rating, rounded to a whole number. Rim protection receives a slight majority, but rebounding remains nearly half the value. A spectacular shot blocker with ordinary board work can therefore land near a more balanced interior presence.

The formula is original to Build A Player and exists to make the decision legible. It is not an official defensive metric and does not account for every real-world scheme. Inside the game, however, the same calculation is used consistently for every candidate, which makes board comparisons and shared challenges reproducible.

02

Direct box-score effects

Paint impact has a direct relationship with two Hooper statistics. Rebounds per game use a base value plus the rating divided by thirteen and a small seeded addition. Blocks per game use a separate base plus the rating divided by seventy-two and another bounded variation. Higher paint impact therefore moves both categories while still respecting fixed result ranges.

The trait also enters the eight-rating average and can become the minimum or maximum selection. As a maximum, it can produce the Two-Way Anchor archetype. As a minimum, it reduces the balance adjustment. This combination makes the slot more influential than reading the blocks line alone would suggest.

03

Size without a position system

The current simulator does not assign the finished player a literal height, weight, or defensive position. A guard's elite interior rating and a center's elite interior rating are treated through the same displayed trait. That is a fantasy-builder choice, not a claim that physical context never matters in real basketball.

Strategy should therefore follow the game that exists. Draft the number and its opportunity cost rather than inventing an unmodeled penalty for size. If a future version adds physical profiles or position matching, the guide and formula should be revised. Until then, paint impact is the authoritative interior input.

04

When interior defense becomes urgent

Paint impact is urgent when the current build is already offense-heavy or when the remaining player pool has lost several elite interior options. It is less urgent when the board offers a rare creator and multiple credible defenders remain. The hard part is remembering that a selected player disappears from every category, so using an elite big for finishing may quietly damage the future paint slot.

A balanced approach often secures at least one defensive category before the final third of the draft. That does not mean taking a mediocre paint rating early. It means watching scarcity and refusing to assume the last board will rescue you. The one allowed skip in a standard run is most valuable when every candidate would lock in a severe weakness.

05

Interpreting a paint-heavy result

An elite paint-impact build should show stronger rebounding and blocks within the bounded formulas. If wins remain disappointing, inspect the complete average and floor. The player may protect the rim but lack shooting, playmaking, or perimeter defense. The game rewards specialization with a strength label while still demanding a season-ready profile.

When testing alternatives, keep the same broad identity and upgrade one interior choice. Because the simulation seed includes the build, mode, team, and simulation version, a changed selection creates a new deterministic result. Compare direction rather than expecting every output to move linearly: overall and interior stats should reflect the change, while playoff exit can still cross a threshold differently.

06

A controlled experiment for your next run

Use one run to chase the highest visible paint-impact number and a second to accept a slightly lower composite while preserving the candidate for finishing or athleticism. Compare rebounds, blocks, overall, and the final weak link. Because paint impact blends two underlying skills, this test is especially useful for checking whether reputation matched the actual board value.
